HISTORIC GADSDEN GREEN

Gadsden Green Homes, established in 1942 and expanded in 1968, stands as a testament to Charleston's history. The community was originally built to provide housing for Black residents during the segregation era. 

Today, Gadsden Green continues is home to more than 80 families. The City of Charleston is working with The Integral Group to create a master plan to rebuild the community into a vibrant and thriving place where people will want to call home.

Our vision is clear in its mission and thoughtful in its approach: to create a thriving, mixed-income community where residents feel secure, supported, and proud to call home. The new Gadsden Green will offer high-quality homes, accessible public spaces, and essential neighborhood services, providing long-term affordability and opportunity for all.

OUR MISSION 

This redevelopment is about building more than homes – it’s about creating opportunity.

The project will ensure: 

  • Every existing resident has a guaranteed place in the new Gadsden Green and will not be relocated off the Gadsden Green property.
  • Affordable housing remains a priority, with rent capped at 30% of income for current public housing residents.
  • Residents benefit from new job training and workforce development opportunities.
  • Community spaces and services support families, seniors, and working individuals.
